The physicians of Surgical Associates established the Olympic Vascular Lab to provide noninvasive Ultrasound evaluations of arterial and venous disease. Advanced ultrasound technology gives our specially trained vascular technologists the ability to perform a full range of specialized diagnostic examinations without the risks and discomforts of traditional invasive tests. These diagnostic imaging tests help map out the body’s veins and arteries, and provide vital information regarding severity and location of diseased vessels and allow us to make informed decisions regarding the best options for each patient.

Noninvasive Testing — Testing that does not require any incision or insertion of an instrument or substance into the body.

Minimally Invasive Testing — Testing carried out by inserting a small diagnostic or treatment device through a small opening in the skin, thereby minimizing patient discomfort and recovery time.

New Treatments Expand the Center’s Services
In 2005 we expanded our lab’s capabilities with the creation of the Olympic Vascular and Vein Center. Today the Center’s services include procedures to treat  varicose veins. Each of the Center’s services relies on noninvasive or minimally invasive techniques. The results are advanced diagnostic and treatment options that minimize discomfort and recovery time.


Varicose Veins are veins near the surface of the leg which are enlarged and dilated, and can sometimes cause pain, swelling, or itching. They are a result of increased venous pressure often related to inherited characteristics. The aging process, occupations that require standing for long periods of time, and excess body weight can contribute to the condition. While varicose veins do not always produce physical symptoms, those with the condition often find their appearance unappealing.

Laser Treatment for Varicose Veins
In this procedure a small single needle puncture is made in the leg and a laser fiber is inserted into the diseased greater or lesser saphenous vein. The laser is activated and as the fiber is moved through the vein it heats and safely closes the vein. The blood that was circulating through this vein is simply rerouted to other healthy veins and the varicose vein essentially vanishes.

A Simple Office-Based Procedure
This minimally invasive procedure is done in our offices under light sedation and local anesthesia. Typically, the entire procedure takes approximately one and a half hours per leg treated; post procedure discomfort is usually minimal and you can resume normal activity within several days.

In this procedure, a solution is injected into the varicose vein causing the vein to be reabsorbed by one’s own body. We often use duplex ultrasound and/or transillumination to achieve precise access to the abnormal vein. In the past the procedure typically worked best on “spider veins.” However, these newer techniques have proven to be effective on larger veins as well.

Microphlebectomy is often used in conjunction with other varicose vein procedures. In this outpatient procedure, several small incisions are made through which a varicose vein segment is removed. Local anesthesia and light sedation are used for your comfort during the procedure.
